Mentor Goals

Our mentors reinforce the four key messages of the National Church Adopt-A-School Initiative (NCAASI):

1) Stay in School
2) No Drugs or Alcohol
3) No Gangs or Violence
4) Sexual Abstinence until Marriage

These four messages are proven to address the majority of “at risk” behaviors of school aged youth; these behaviors severely limit them from achieving their highest potential academically, socially, physically, emotionally and spiritually. To accomplish this, our Mentors will have access to two Life Skills and Character Education curricula used with success by the National Church Adopt-A-School Initiative.

Statistics change to successes when mentors provide the guidance, care, and commitment that is missing in a child's life. Youth in a mentoring relationship are:

• five times more likely to graduate if they have a meaningful relationship with an adult.
• 46% less likely than their peers to start using illegal drugs.
• 27% less likely to start drinking.
• 52% are less likely than their peers to skip school.

Positive outcomes of public school-based mentoring include:

• 64% of the students developing more positive attitudes toward school.
• 58% achieving higher grades in social studies, languages, and math.
• 60% experiencing improved relationships with adults, and 56% improved relationships with peers.
• 55% being better able to express their feelings.
• 64% developing higher levels of self-confidence.
• 62% being more likely to trust their teachers.
